KENYA'S NEW CURRENCY

December 11 2018, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) unveiled Kenya’s new generation coins. These coins start circulating immediately.
The new currency, was gazetted on Tuesday December 11, 2018. One remarkable thing in this Kenya's new currency is that it contains features that make it accessible to visually impaired people.
The unveiling of the new generation coins was presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta in the capital Nairobi. These coins will be available in denominations of Sh1, Sh5, Sh10 and Sh20.
This was also a memorable moment since President Kenyatta, was making his first visit to CBK since taking office in 2013 and to crown it all he received a symbolic cheque of dividends on behalf of the government.

 Features on New Currency
These coins unlike the old ones which had portraits of former presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi have features Kenya's rich wildlife heritage, as follows:

  • Sh20: Bears the image of an elephant.
  • Sh10: Bears the image of a lion
  • Sh5: Bears the image of a rhino
  •  Sh1: Bears the image of a giraffe

Why New Currency?
The unveiling of the new currency was occasioned by the provisions of the 2010 Constitution that banned the use of presidential portraits on Kenyan currency. Article 231(4) of the 2010 Constitution outlawed currency bearing portraits and images of individuals. The constitution states that notes and coins issued by CBK may bear images that depict or symbolise Kenya or any aspect of Kenya but shall not bear the portrait of any individual. It is in this line that on December 11, 2018 the Central Bank of Kenya unveiled the new-look currency.

Going Forward
The old coins will now be phased-out. According to CBK, this phasing-out will be done gradually. this means, for the time being, the new generation coins will circulate alongside the existing ones.

What remains to be seen is how the new-look notes will be like.
