KENYA'S NEW CURRICULUM ROLL-OUT PUSHED TO 2020!

 KENYA'S NEW CURRICULUM ROLL-OUT PUSHED TO 2020!

The much awaited implementation of Kenya’s New Curriculum (2-6-3-3) has encountered delay yet again. December 15, 2018, the Education CS together with stakeholders reached a conclusion to have the once highly hyped program put on hold until 2020. This is a replica of what took place last year (2017) when it was announced that the implementation was to wait to wait longer and instead,  piloting was to continue in some selected schools.

This announcement to have the implementation put on hold came when most of the stakeholders, parents, books publishers and private schools  were raising concerns over the direction this program was to take. This was after the said stakeholders noted loud silence in the Ministry of Education quarters. Stakeholders feared that the huge investment they had made towards this new curriculum would go to waste; now their worst nightmare has hit them hard.

Making the announcement the CS said, “The directorate of quality assurance and standards will be tasked to vigorously track the implementation of the competency-based curriculum in all sub-counties across the country and the training of quality assurance officers that will commence in February 2019.”

She continued to say that a secretariat would be established to coordinate the priorities, activities, communication and implementation infrastructure to support the CBC. “The curriculum focus at the Ministry of Education will be re-organised to secure supervision and evaluation of the CBC in all public, private and special needs institutions across the country,” she said.

The decision to put the roll-out on hold for one more year was arrived at following a meeting that had been called on December 15, 2018 to try and save the programme.

Previously,  pronouncement by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed's that the ministry was not ready to roll-out the 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum next year led to panic and strong opposition from some parents and publishers who had made heavy investments in the programme.
However, following this meeting the stakeholders agreed to continue with pilot programme and start training of tutors in teachers’ colleges on the new curriculum in January, 2019. As they wait to have the new curriculum rolled out in 2020.
